Brook of Hope Home September 2024 Update

The Chance to Sleep Peacefully

At Brook of Hope Home, every day is a chance for a new beginning. For so many boys who once called the streets home, the hope they find here is unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. Today’s story is just one of the many feel-good moments that remind us why this work matters so deeply.

Peter, our project manager, has seen these boys at their lowest—ragged, tired, and wary of trusting anyone. But now we see a transformation within them.

It all started when they walked in from town, back to the house, eager to wash away the grime of their days spent on the streets. With clean water and soap, they scrubbed their bodies and their clothes, smiling and joking around with one another. A simple act, but one that helps to restore their sense of dignity.

Afterward, they gathered under the big tree, for a time of singing praise and worship songs. These boys, hardened by life’s challenges, danced and laughed like kids. You could see it in their eyes—a sense of belonging, of feeling worthiness, was returning to them. When I was there, it was moments like this that made me see how very special BHH is in this community.

And then came the meal. A hot lunch served family-style, as it always is. This way, the boys not only receive nourishment for their bodies but a sense of brotherhood too. They sit together, sharing stories, and creating bonds that some of them had long ago lost or never known. Their plates were full, but more than that, their spirits were being fed in a way that can only happen when you are surrounded by the love of Christ as seen in our staff.

As the meal ended, stomachs full, something unexpected happened. With contented sighs, the boys began to nod off, and one brave boy spoke up. He voiced a request.

“Could we take a nap?”

Peter was surprised but thrilled. These were street-hardened boys, always on guard, always alert. Yet here, in the comfort of Brook of Hope, they felt so safe, so cared for, that all they wanted was the chance to sleep peacefully, safely.

With a smile, Peter obliged. Mattresses were brought out and laid beneath the shade of a large tree. One by one, the boys settled down. There, in the warmth of the Zambian sun, these tough, weary souls slept soundly.

For the first time in a long time, they slept like babies—no fear, no hunger, just peace. It was a moment of grace, a glimpse of God’s love at work. These boys, who had known so much hardship, were given the gift of rest, safe and sound in a place that treated them not as burdens, but as beloved sons.

Brook of Hope Home provides more than meals and shelter. It’s a place where these boys can begin to dream again, to believe that life can be different. But we can’t do it alone.

Every nap, every song of praise, every hot meal shared —it’s all made possible by people like you, who choose to give. Today, as you read this story, consider the impact your generosity has had. We thank you and appreciate you. You are a part of their transformation.
