Giving Tuesday: Standing With Our Community in a Time of Need

Dear Friends and Supporters,

On this Giving Tuesday, when people around the world unite to support causes that matter, I want to share with you a very real and urgent situation affecting our Brook of Hope Home family in Zambia.

Having witnessed firsthand the heavy rains and the devastation they bring, I ask for your prayers. When torrents of flooding water hit poorly constructed homes, families who already have very little can lose everything within minutes. Many of the children we serve live in the surrounding slums and come from homes that are not built to withstand such conditions. Some of their houses have been damaged or destroyed in the recent storms.

The flooding near our Brook of Hope Home facility was severe enough to bring down power lines and interrupt water supply across our area. Situations like these can quickly lead to disease outbreaks, displacement, and a deep sense of fear and hopelessness for vulnerable families.

That is why it meant so much to receive this message from our Program Manager, Peter Musentekwa:

“Throughout the day we’ve been helping our community with water. The heavy downpour on Saturday destroyed ZESCO power lines, which has also affected the water supply. It just feels good to be there for others, even in the smallest way possible. Most areas have been cut off from power and water due to the rains, but we thank God that we still have both.”

Brook of Hope Home is not only caring for the precious children and youth in our programs — we are also standing alongside their families and our wider community in moments of crisis. This is what it means to shine God’s light when darkness threatens to take hold.

On this Giving Tuesday, your support can make an immediate and meaningful difference. If you feel led, please consider giving today to help us continue responding to urgent needs and providing stability, hope, and practical help to those affected.

On another trip, I had given one of the young men we were ministering to some money to buy clothes for his upcoming college semester. He then returned with new shirts and shoes.

“And where are your pants?” I asked.

“I bought some,” he said shyly.
“Well let’s see them!” I insisted, thinking he was just being modest.

He became terribly embarrassed, and I couldn’t understand why until someone kindly explained that in Zambia, “pants” means “underwear.”

So yes, I had been repeatedly asking this poor young man to model his brand-new underwear for me. Once the moment passed, we all laughed, and I will use the word “trousers” from now on.
