Meet Bryson Zulu: A Story of Hope and Resilience
15-year-old Bryson Zulu is the fifth of eight children, living in Makululu, one of the largest informal settlements (slums) in Zambia. His story is one of resilience, hope, and a family’s fight against poverty. His parents, like many in his community, struggle to provide for their family, relying on inconsistent work just to put food on the table.
In Bryson’s family, no one has ever completed school. Lacking basic school supplies and even shoes—he also had to drop out of school. Faced with hunger and the pressures of daily life, Bryson needed to support himself, so he joined his older brother on the streets to survive.
It was at one of Brook of Hope Home’s Friday feeding programs for street children that we met Bryson. Hungry, determined, and hoping to earn enough for a new pair of shoes for school, he stood out from the crowd. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Bryson was provided with not just shoes, but the full set of school supplies he needed to return to school. With a new school bag, books, pens, and a renewed sense of purpose, Bryson left the streets and went back home to his family.
He now attends grade 4 and every Saturday, he joins our tutoring sessions, working hard to catch up on the education he’s missed and building a brighter future.
Bryson’s story is not just about survival—it’s about breaking the cycle of poverty that has trapped his family for generations. With your support, he can now become the first in his family to complete school, paving the way for his siblings to follow in his footsteps.
