Introducing Sewing Hope
Every Stitch Tells a Story
Dear Friends of Brook of Hope Home,
Over the past few days, you may have seen our social media posts introducing an exciting new initiative at Brook of Hope Home. We have already received questions from people wanting to know more and we are delighted to officially introduce you to Sewing Hope!
A Girl Should Never Have to Choose Between Her Education and Her Dignity
For many girls in Zambia, period poverty is a very real barrier to education. Without access to suitable menstrual products, girls miss several days of school every month. Those missed days can cause them to fall behind academically and affect their confidence, self-esteem and future opportunities.
Sewing Hope is our practical and compassionate response. Launching on August 1, 2026, the program will teach older Brook of Hope Home students, both boys and girls, valuable life skills such as sewing, tailoring, and entrepreneurship. One sewing machine has already been generously donated through “Tools With A Mission”. We now hope to purchase a second machine and sewing/cutting table. We will be receiving donations to the Sewing Hope campaign to purchase these items, allowing more students to participate and receive hands-on practice.
More Than Pads. We Build Futures.
The students’ first project will be making reusable menstrual pad kits for the female students at Brook of Hope Home. A local tailor or seamstress will teach and supervise the sewing portion of the program.
During the program each girl will receive:
Ten washable sanitary pads
A handmade drawstring storage bag
- Menstrual health education taught by a nurse
Throughout the program the 3 Rs are being enforced. Recycling gently used cotton clothing from local markets which will be carefully prepared and repurposed. This teaches students not only to sew, but also to reuse and reduce waste. It will also help them recognize the possibilities within the resources around them.
As their abilities grow, students will progress to making fabric purses and bags, completing clothing repairs and eventually sewing school uniforms and trousers for our students. Some handmade items may also be sold to help support the program and provide future opportunities for students.
Sewing Hope meets an immediate need while investing in the future. It can help a girl remain in school, give a young person a practical skill and perhaps one day provide a pathway toward employment or a small business.
